NighT 4

"Where is merciful God, where is He?" The feeling of an unpresent God is among the Jews during this time. They are still questioning His existence. Jews were starting to be hung, which makes Elie make this comment; "Where He is? This is where-hanging here from this gallows..." Elie says God is the one who is hanging from the rope. He seems to have lost his faith in God totally when he should have gained faith. Elie is lucky that he is still alive at this point. The only food they eat is soup and bread.

I noticed that the fire the crazy woman saw, who was hollucinating on the train, was a sign of foreshadowing. A huge fire occured in this chapter and caused total chaos in the camp. Two pots of soup were sitting alone, which made some starving Jews try to be sneaky and eat some. The ones that got caught eating the unguarded soup were hanged to death in front of there fellow Jews. What a horrifying sight!
